Is this Familiar Saying Always True?

“Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” I’ve seen the same thing written as “Those who don’t know history are destined to repeat it.”

Either way, I disagree. If I agreed, then I’d have to think of myself at the same time something like “Everything that happened before this moment about which I am ignorant is an action that I too will necessarily perform.”

Rubbish!

  1. I think it means that history is full of examples of mistakes being made. Being unaware of those historical mistakes does not doom you to repeating them unless you choose to repeat the actions that led to them.
